George R.R. Martin, You Broke My Heart This Morning

I have been reading the third book in George R.R. Martin's fantastical series for... a long time, now. I think it's been a month? I'm not sure, days and weeks have blurred together. The books are so darn long! Anyways, this morning on my T ride into work Martin killed off two beloved (to me) characters. I nearly burst into tears. I had to hold it in. I was so hurt by his decision that I considered tossing the book out the window, except T windows don't actually open. How could he do that?!

I had been warned by a coworker back when I read the first book "Game of Thrones" that Martin is not adverse to killing off main characters, as evidence by beheading Sean Bean in the first season (for those only watching and not reading, but you really should read the books because they contain SO much more than the show). Sean Bean! For me, it was like watching Dumbledore die because Ned Stark, for all his faults, was a good person and a good leader for his people. But I was okay with it because I knew it was the catalyst for what the story needed to do - show the constant struggle for power (namely the bad guys' constant greed for power and keeping anything or anyone that would upend that buried). But to kill off BLANK and BLANK in the third book? I don't know how I can read on. Truly. I want to give up, and I've never felt that about a book before, at least not one I was enjoying so much.

My coworker, who read this book and the fourth last month, has urged me to keep with it, that it'll get better, but unless she can bring these two characters back from the dead I just don't see how it could get better. UGH! George, why did you have to kill them?! I am sure there was a purpose for it, obviously. And I will get over it, just like I got over the ending of "One Day". But I'm not happy about it! Not one bit!

What are you currently reading? I'm always looking for good recommendations.

Happy Reading!

Stephanie
