Porchlandia: Porches

I think this is going to be my last post about Porchlandia. How did that happen so quickly? Let's take a final look at the house from the outside. The landscaping was done by my cousin and uncle. There's no "before" of the photos below because where I stood to take this photo had been woods. My cousin created a yard where there wasn't one.

Years ago, my dad took out the railing in the upstairs of my childhood home and installed a metal railing with cable, much like the railing on the front porch. In the summer 2016 issue of Boston Home Magazine (The Coastal Issue) I noticed a lot of cable railings, so I guess my dad was ahead of the curve. It's a style choice that I personally love because unlike other railings it allows an unimpeded view.

The new front porch... I see it being almost an extension of the house. In the nicer months I imagine putting outdoor couches and tables on the porch for grilling and setting up a firepit in the yard. Set back from the road there'd be no issue with hosting parties and dinners with friends and family.

Before, when you'd drive up to the house you couldn't see it until you were at the garage. Now you can actually spot it from the street, in all its glory.

And to the back porch, which was clearly very unloved...

I don't know, I guess I'm biased but it's such an amazing transformation. From dark to bright, from dilapidated to shiny and new.

So that's it. That's Porchlandia as it was and as it stands now. I hope someone who loves it for the amazing piece of property that it is will buy it and appreciate it, will cook amazing meals in the kitchen and laze in front of the fire as I so badly want to.

And now we move on.

  1. Congratulations on an incredible job. It was so fun to follow along as you transformed each room and the exterior. I cannot wait to see what you flip next!
