Procrastination Recipe: Ma Petite Cherries

The Amazing Molly hosted a party on Saturday night, and I offered to make cupcakes. Her request on flavor was "something boozy". I have never cooked with alcohol before so I wasn't sure what brand to buy (first mistake). I asked the twenty-something guys working in the liquor store what cherry-flavored liqueur would be best for baking with and they suggested this bottle (can't recall the name) that was basically straight-up cherry-flavored vodka. I don't think I'll bake with it again.

I bought a Devil's Food cake box and made the cupcakes per the instructions (why not make it easier for yourself where you can?) and then after they came out of the oven I poked holes in them with a fork and poured a capful of the cherry "liqueur" in them. It gets absorbed pretty quickly because the cakes are hot. Then I let them rest overnight. As a quick note, this really only gives you the faintest hint of cherry flavor.I think using 2 capfuls would be better in the future.

For the frosting:
1 bag confectioner's sugar
1 stick of room temperature butter
1/4 cup cherry liqueur
1 small jar of maraschino cherries and about half the jar's juice for colour

Lessons learned from this batch of frosting (which I felt was a little too boozy but apparently my taste-testers disagreed and loved it) - do not wear a white shirt when dicing cherries. Bad news. Also, go light on the pouring of the booze. I really wanted that cherry flavor to pop and I think I could have done it better with a better cherry liqueur.

How adorable are the French themed toppers that Molly added!

So this past weekend was a puppy sitting weekend with my main canine squeeze - Nemo. We are pretty much exclusive at this point. His mothers go away and he comes to my house (much to the dismay of my cats).

Here was Bug's response Thursday night when I gave her the news that the terrifying Westie was coming to stay for two nights:

To say she was less than thrilled is an understatement. Poor Bug.

But despite the fact that the cats were cordoned off in the bedroom (for their safety), Nemo and I had a wonderful weekend full of walks, a party, walking around SoWa (and he managed to convince me to buy him a bag of salmon-peanut butter treats) and lots of cuddles.

If you have a boozy cupcake recipe of your own I'd love to try it! I'm always up for new cupcake recipes. And since today is the official first day of Fall, give this delicious recipe a try!

Happy Eating!

  1. Personally, I felt the cupcakes had just the right amount of booze. I loved them. For all your readers out there, please share your boozy baking recipes. We want to try them! And by "we" I mean, Stephanie bakes them and I serve them.
