Holiday Gifts That Give

Two weeks ago my sister and I were driving home from one of my cat sitting clients' homes and while stopped behind another car a city bus plowed into us. It was one of those moments where you realize that in fact you are not invisible and bad things can happen. We are both okay, although I've had back pain on a daily basis since. However, what upsets me the most is my current lack of a car. Why? Well, mostly because I can't start my holiday shopping. Usually by the first week of December I'm nearly finished with most gifts already wrapped. At this point I know what I intend to purchase for my loved ones but I have yet to buy them. But anywho, this leads me to what you can purchase from the comfort of your own home. And for me, I love gifts that serve dual purposes - that you give to a loved one but also give back.

So obviously if you've been visiting this blog for a while you know how much I love Best Friends. I would visit and volunteer there every month if I could afford the plane ticket. The vacation I spent there with my mother absolutely impacted my life in the best way possible. And on our last day volunteering we stopped into the store to stock up on goodies. I got a sweatshirt and a keychain and wanted so much more. But guess what? They have an online store! They've got jewelry, clothing, totes, socks, collars, leashes (there's a flipping adorable bowtie that would look perfect on Nemo). Mom, if you're reading this, I really want the tote above. Nudge, nudge.

I don't remember how I came across Caliber Collection, but I think maybe it was from Cory Booker (everyone has a major crush on him, right? It's not just me?). What is Caliber Collection? It's an amazing program that takes guns and shellcasings off the street and turns them into gorgeous jewelry. That number on the bangle? It's the serial number from the gun or shell casings it was made from. The packaging it comes in is really cool and makes you feel like you're opening evidence from a case (which you sort of are). I have the Steel Cuff and it's a solid piece of jewelry. It feels pretty powerful when you wear it.

I don't remember how I found this organization, but over the last few years I've bought items for myself as well as gifted some. Born from tragedy, this company makes some kickass clothing and accessories that support animal welfare organizations. After Cecil the lion was needlessly slaughtered, I ordered a bag to support Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. They have some pretty awesome "ugly Christmas sweaters" if you're in the market.

I hope this helps you if you were struggling with gift ideas for loved ones. And hopefully I'll have a vehicle again soon so I can get my own holiday shopping underway and also stock up on cat food. But that's a post for another time.

Happy shopping!
