Porchlandia: Bathroom Demo

Demo. I'm almost too tired to even type right now. All I want to do is sleep for like twelve hours. Ten even. And then go to brunch and then watch the Olympics all afternoon. Is that too much to ask? I'll make this quick because there is a cat with two paws on me, her head bent over my hand, trying her best to stealthily inch onto my lap.

As you remember, the master bath was a piece of work. Green-ish carpet, dated dual vanity, toilet, and shower/tub. My sister and I ripped out the vanity, toilet, and carpet in the first two days. Then over the weekend I saws-all'ed (I don't think saws-all can be turned into a past tense verb but whatever) the master tub, tore it and the cement beneath it out. I am no longer a fan of fiberglass tubs, having had shards of it all over myself.

So no more vanity, no more toilet, no more tub. Just studs and horribly wallpapered drywall. It's a large bathroom, don't get me wrong, but it feels smaller without those items in it. Is that weird? But honestly it does feel smaller. I wonder if it will feel larger once we install the soaker tub and new vanity and shower.

Why did someone think that a brownish-yellow tub would look good? Just picture the beautiful white tub that will be going into that space.

The spot that I was standing in to take the above photo will eventually be a wall. Originally you could walk into the master bath via the bedroom or the extra space on the other end of the upstairs. But to really make the master bath special it makes sense to only have access to it through the bedroom.

The space beside where the tub was, was originally a waste of space (see below) used for hanging towels. My father bumped one wall further out so that we can put in a shower.

Walk-in showers are one of my dream house items. I see them more and more in hotels and it always excites me. They just feel so... luxurious. Who wouldn't want a rain shower with glass doors in their home? Give me that over a tub/shower combo any day.

It won't be grandiose, but it'll do nicely. Would it be weird if after we finish the house I not only have a meal and read a book by the fire but also take a shower? I mean I should probably test everything out. To make sure everything works perfectly. For the buyer.

Now to the downstairs bath. I spent Monday morning saws-all'ing this and then carrying the cement beneath it down a slight of stairs and out to the dumpster. Cross-fitters got nothing on me. I kid. Crossfitters are crazy. No, but seriously, demo is basically the most extreme workout. Hauling carpet is my least favorite thing. It's the worst. I think that's why my dad makes me do it.

So the tubs are out and the spaces are ready. Tile has been agreed upon (though my dad could totally change it without telling me - he's done it before). Soaker tub and shower base ordered. We even looked at a gorgeous double vanity for the master, but I'm not sure if that's the one we're going with.

So now I'm back in the city and won't be back to Porchlandia until Saturday. When I left today, our contractors had ripped all the siding off, save for over the garage. I am assuming, weather permitting, that when I drive up on Saturday morning all of the new siding, a gorgeous barn board that my father stained himself (the same color as we used on the garage on the Ranch House), will be up. Fingers crossed. I think it will look fantastic compared to the dark, dreary brown it was only a few days ago.

All for now.

  1. I laughed out loud at "would it be weird if I took a shower?" Also, who creates a space for towel racks? So odd.
