A Little Rant About Animals & Breeding

I've been spending a lot of time with my grandparents lately and numerous times they have brought up that some family members that live in another state, which recently bought a purebred dog from a breeder, are intending to breed the pup when she comes of age. I could, quite honestly, burst into tears at the thought of that. Not from joy, mind you. But from horror at their ignorance.

According to the Humane Society of the U.S., 2.7 MILLION healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized every year. Read that number again. Did you heart just stop beating? Mine did.

I could say that it's not their fault that my family members aren't aware of that number. They likely don't peruse websites like The Humane Society or Best Friends and I can't fault them for that. But how often have you been watching TV and seen those heartbreaking commercials with Sarah McLaughlin music playing over the saddest, dirtiest, pathetic faces of puppies and kitties? I know you've seen them at least once because they are on all the time. So you can't claim ignorance anymore. It's 2014, people. And if you're friends with me on Facebook then your news feed likely has some animal-related item in it that I shared today. So you know.

2.7 MILLION. You buy from a breeder or a pet store and you've just added one more animal to that number.

Why did I choose to rant about this today? Because I've been thinking about those family members since this past weekend when my Aunt brought it up again and I almost lost it as I started ranting. I've been trying to figure out how to approach them to dispel them of their idea of breeding her and I feel so emotional about it that I don't think I would be able to calmly present a case against what they are doing.

Also, I came across this today and it is so heart-breakingly beautiful that I had to share it. What an idea.

Heart = Broken. (I.e. I might be crying at my desk.)

So now... you're aware. Pass on the word to your friends and family. Strangers, even. Don't buy from a breeder or pet store. Adopt. Spay. Neuter. Save a life. Fall in love.
